As some of you may have experienced at the New Jersey State Bar Association’s annual meeting, in a program called “Thinking On Your Feet©: Using Improv to Enhance Persuasion and Presentation Skills In and Out of the Courtroom,” improvisation skills, the unscripted subset of acting skills, can help you be a more effective communicator by honing your ability to listen, collaborate creatively and overcome obstacles and conflict, especially the unexpected.

“In your sales career, is that where you learned how to lie?” asked a conference attendee standing next to me in the buffet lunch line last year. My sales background was noted in my bio as a speaker. “No,” I answered, “sales is based on empathy, really standing in the buyer’s shoes by questioning and listening intently. If you lie, the sale and your reputation are dead.”
