A firm trying to collect $100,000 in fees from a former matrimonial client lost its court-ordered lien on money in a trust account when the divorcing couple agreed that those funds would be exempt from equitable distribution and go to the client’s former spouse.

An appeals court reversed a lower court judge’s refusal to lift the lien, which had been obtained by Budd Larner the year before the divorcing couple entered into the property agreement.
