The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled Monday that polluters do not have to wait for cleanup to be completed or for the state Department of Environmental Protection to sign off on a remediation plan before they can ask that other potential responsible parties also be held liable.

The decision opens the door for plaintiff Magic Petroleum Corp. to move ahead with its suit against ExxonMobil Corp. alleging it contributed to the contamination of land in Millstone Township, N.J., and should be responsible for helping to pay for remediation.
