In a case of a vanishing defendant, a New Jersey appeals court has upheld a $1.2 million default judgment against two insurance companies that dragged their feet in responding to a motor vehicle suit.

The Appellate Division on Sept. 19 affirmed the denial of the insurers’ bid to vacate the judgment, even though the at-fault motorist was nowhere to be found, because the insurers were aware of the suit from the beginning.
