Justice Jaynee LaVecchia, who has been serving on the New Jersey Supreme Court longer than any of the other current justices, is the plaintiff in a wrongful death and survival action over the loss of her husband Michael Cole, a former Division of Law director, chief counsel to Gov. Tom Kean and a name partner in the prominent Teaneck, N.J., firm DeCotiis, FitzPatrick & Cole.

Cole died in 2011 at the age of 67, about six weeks after he was struck by a car in a supermarket parking lot, an accident that allegedly led to his death, according to court documents.
