The New Jersey Supreme Court is grappling with how to mesh a new statute regulating the way alimony is to be awarded with what defines short-term and long-term marriages.

Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation in September generally designed to limit the award of permanent alimony in marriages of 20 years or less, and to take into consideration factors such as the age of the parties and their earning potential.
