What does it mean for a young lawyer to successfully practice law?

Many young lawyers, wide-eyed and ready to attack a growing workload, think they can find the “key to success” by working hard and honing their legal skills. It does not take long, however, to learn that there is something arguably just as important to being a successful lawyer than the elusive 2,000-plus billable hour requirement—you must learn the business side of the legal industry as well. That’s when young lawyers find themselves at the mercy of two words that cause a multitude of emotions, ranging from fear to anxiety to excitement to utter bewilderment: business development.
