When a federal judge recently thwarted New Jersey’s latest effort to institute sports wagering, it wasn’t just lawmakers and gambling enthusiasts who were paying attention. Atlantic City lawyers said sports betting, were it to come to fruition, would be a boon to casinos—and possibly to gaming lawyers as well.

“If it were to become legal…it would be a great business opportunity for the casinos in Atlantic City,” said Nicholas Casiello Jr., who chairs Philadelphia-based Fox Rothschild’s gaming practice group out of the 30-lawyer Atlantic City office. “And that would mean it would be a great opportunity for attorneys who do gaming work.
