Former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Robert Clifford, who served under three chief justices and for longer than all but two other associate justices, died Nov. 29 at the age of 89.

Clifford was known as a meticulous jurist and an exacting grammarian who crafted his opinions with as much of an eye for how well they were written as for the result they reached.
