AND CYBER HARASSMENT MAKES FIFTEEN…

A bill adding cyber harassment to the domestic violence statutes was released from the Assembly Women and Children Committee last week. A-3813, sponsored by Assemblyman Craig J. Coughlin, permits a temporary and permanent restraining order under the current Prevention of Domestic Violence Act of 1999 to be issued on grounds that the person seeking the order is a victim of cyber harassment. Presently, under this act, there are fourteen predicate offenses that constitute domestic violence and cyber harassment would be the fifteenth. As reported previously, the Senate counterpart, sponsored by Senator Joseph F. Vitale, was introduced and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee where the association will continue to monitor it.
