Essex County Assignment Judge Patricia Costello, who has been in charge of New Jersey’s largest and busiest judicial vicinage for more than a decade, announced Jan. 14 that she plans to retire as of March 1.

A judge for more than 25 years and the assignment judge in Essex since August 2004, Costello is stepping down at age 61, well short of the mandatory retirement age of 70.
