The pitfalls awaiting a lawyer who fails to properly care for himself while managing an incredibly demanding career are many: depression, addiction, suicidal thinking, etc. There is much in a career that can be unsatisfying, disappointing—even hurtful. There is also much that is deeply rewarding, uplifting and encouraging. It’s a career of big ups and big downs.

Lawyers, being people who so often have very high expectations for themselves, have little tolerance for the downs. Without developing counter-balancing activities and support systems, it is very easy to fall prey to serious problems. It is the seasoned, mid-career lawyer who finds herself suffering with a toxic mix we refer to as “BAD”; that is, burnout, addiction, depression.
