A $7.8 million settlement in a negligent security suit, stemming from the murder of a woman and an assault on her infant, was the largest premises liability award of 2014. The settlement, obtained by the four principals of Eichen, Crutchlow, Zaslow & McElroy, was approved by a Bergen County judge on June 6, 2014.
The suit, Estate of Reyes v. Westgate Management, stems from the stabbing death of Jacqueline Reyes, 29, of the Paulus Hook Towers apartment complex in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Dec. 8, 2009. She had 34 stab wounds in the face, neck, torso and arms. Her 7-month-old son, Ivan, was stabbed eight times in the abdomen. The child was hospitalized for two months after the attack.
