The New Jersey Supreme Court has ruled that there was no violation of equal protection guarantees when the Legislature and the Christie administration, in an effort to resolve a budget crisis, chose to block some legal resident aliens from receiving Medicaid benefits.

The court, in a 4-2 ruling, issued no written opinion in its March 30 decision in Guaman v. Velez. Instead, both the majority and the minority relied on the opinions issued by a divided Appellate Division panel last August.
