New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie and his administration may soon be facing what they had least hoped would happen: indictments by a federal grand jury of some former staffers and a close friend and ally on charges that have their roots in the abrupt closure of local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in September 2013.

Persons familiar with the investigation led by U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman of the District of New Jersey, and at least one other related one, have said it appears that those investigations are drawing to a close, although it should be noted that media predictions about the possibility of imminent indictments in recent months have been in error.
