Travelling outside of the United States or to other states can be an exciting part of family plans or a necessary part of business. This article addresses some important medical and legal considerations to be aware of when choosing a destination and contemplating activities and excursions.

Medical Concerns

Before finalizing a trip, gather information pertaining to the availability and quality of medical care in the event of an emergency. Does the destination provide a well-staffed hospital capable of treating serious emergencies, or will transfer to a different location or even country be necessary? The State Department Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management administers the Consular Information Program, which informs the public of conditions abroad that may affect their safety. A snapshot of a potential destination’s health facilities, standards of medical training and complaints related to same could prove pertinent to the planning phase of a trip. http://travel.state.gov
