Resolving a highly charged legal dispute over the appropriateness of the state’s $225 million settlement of an environmental case against Exxon Mobil Corp., Superior Court Judge Michael J. Hogan recently released a meticulous 81-page opinion approving all aspects of the deal.
The settlement brings closure at the trial level to an 11-year litigation centering on damage to marshes, wetlands and waterways surrounding Exxon’s Linden Bayway and Bayonne refineries. The settlement also includes numerous smaller sites.
