The New Jersey Supreme Court is set to decide whether state lawmakers intended for retroactive application of a 2011 amendment to the no-fault statute that prevents personal-injury-protection carriers from being reimbursed at the expense of injured persons.

The court’s decision will determine whether an Essex County man, left paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident, will have to reimburse his PIP carrier $250,000 for medical expenses out of a $1 million settlement.
