New Jersey lawmakers have taken initial steps toward enacting three pieces of legislation aimed at increasing consumer protections—two that would regulate the use of arbitration in consumer contract disputes and one that would place restrictions on the use of “payment assurance devices” on financed vehicles.

The bills passed through the Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee on Feb. 4 with no opposition votes, although they likely are to be amended to appease some concerns raised by business and industry groups.
