Passaic County Superior Court Judge Joseph Portelli broke down twice during an April 6 hearing before the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct and began sobbing uncontrollably, once during opening statements and again when he started to testify.

The panel heard testimony and arguments over whether Portelli, a former family court judge who allegedly made suggestive comments to attorneys and litigants and made disparaging remarks about his assignment, should be disciplined.
