More than 700 guests attended the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association’s 9th annual Women’s Initiative and Leaders in the Law (WILL) Platinum Gala at The Grove in Cedar Grove on March 22. Five women from the bench and bar received the NJWLA’s WILL Platinum Award. They were: Lois Goodman, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of New Jersey; Judge Harriet Derman (retired), Superior Court of New Jersey, Chancery Division and of counsel at Di Francesco, Bateman, Kunzman, Davis, Lehrer & Flaum; Kirsten Scheurer Branigan, NJWLA Past President and principal with the Law Office of Kirsten Scheurer Branigan; Michellene Davis, executive vice president for corporate affairs at Barnabas Health; and Carolyn Murray, acting Essex County prosecutor. The NJWLA also spotlighted its 2015 Grant Recipients, who received grants totaling over $25,000. The 2016 Grant Recipients are: Partners for Women and Justice, the Alice Paul Institute, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice and The New Jersey Law & Education Empowerment Project. Scholarships were awarded to three female law students from Seton Hall University School of Law and Rutgers School of Law, who wrote essays that appeared in the 2016 Gala Journal.

Hudson Bar Offers Scholarships

The Hudson County Bar Foundation will award scholarships to students who are attending law school or who have been accepted to law school for the September 2016–May 2017 term. Students must be bona fide residents of Hudson County; must demonstrate financial need; must provide two current letters of recommendation; and must account for appropriate academic standards. Interested applicants can write to the Hudson County Bar Foundation Scholarship Committee, 583 Newark Ave., Jersey City, New Jersey 07306, call 201-798-4708, send an email to [email protected] or visit its website at www.hcbalaw.com for an application. All applications must be received on or before May 13.
