Millennials. The most ethnically, culturally and economically diverse generation in American history, this 18- to 34-year old subset of the population now constitutes the largest demographic portion of the U.S. workforce. All professional service industries have been affected by the Millennial impact, and the legal profession is no exception. Millennials currently make up 21.5% of lawyers in the United States, and Millennials have kickstarted intense dialogues within law firms regarding innumerable issues, including work-life balance, the use of technology, and professional and personal development.
These dialogues have caused private law firms to dedicate significant resources to the “management” of Millennials as they are “integrated” into the workplace. A more insightful approach would be a forward-thinking perspective. Millennials currently make up the lower tiers of many businesses and professional organizations, but within the next 10 years they will ascend to the decision-making positions. Thus, Millennials will make up a large portion of a firm’s actual and prospective client base.
