New Jersey lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require that the Attorney General’s Office, and not county prosecutors, investigate and pursue criminal charges against any law enforcement officer involved in an incident in which a civilian is killed.
The chief sponsor, state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, introduced the bill on July 14 in response to fatal shootings of civilians by police in Minnesota and Louisiana, and of the shooting deaths of five Dallas police officers.
