The New Jersey Supreme Court has ruled that an indigent parent whose child is subject to private adoption proceedings has the constitutional right to court-appointed counsel if he or she has decided to object to the adoption.

The court, in a unanimous ruling, said a birth parent has the same right to counsel in a private adoption dispute as does a birth parent in a case in which the state is seeking to terminate parental rights.
