A man who spent the better part of two decades incarcerated before a DNA test exonerated him has cleared hurdles in his civil suit against law enforcement and the court-appointed lawyers who represented him along the way.

Motions to dismiss claims lodged by Rodney Roberts—against the city of Newark, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Public Defender’s Office—were largely denied in a recent decision by U.S. District Judge Kevin McNulty of the District of New Jersey.
