A New Jersey appeals court has overturned a $19 million verdict in a motorcycle injury case, citing the cumulative effect of erroneous evidentiary rulings and prejudicial comments by the trial judge.

A jury in Sussex County awarded $15.5 million for pain and suffering to plaintiff Steven Visaggio, who suffered spinal injuries when his motorcycle was hit by a pickup truck in 2010, and $3.8 million to his wife, Barbara, for loss of consortium. But that was after the trial judge excluded surveillance video taken three years after the accident, allegedly showing Visaggio, a home improvement contractor, working on a roof and carrying a large sheet of plywood by himself.
