An appeals court has ordered a new trial for Dharun Ravi, a former Rutgers University student who was sentenced to 30 days in jail for spying on his gay roommate’s sexual encounter with another man.
Ravi was convicted on charges including bias intimidation, invasion of privacy, tampering with evidence and hindering apprehension in March 2012 for setting a web camera to violate the privacy of Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge after learning of Ravi’s actions.
