The New Jersey Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Sept. 12 on whether government agencies can invoke sovereign immunity from Americans with Disabilities Act claims, even after those claims have been considered by a jury.

The court’s ruling, which is not expected for months, will determine whether a $1.06 million verdict previously rendered against the New Jersey State Police in favor of a now-retired trooper, Brian Royster, stands. Royster, an African-American, says he was passed over for promotion and subject to discrimination because of his ulcerative colitis.
