With two vacancies on the state’s 17-seat federal court, New Jerseyans may be disappointed if the November election result fails to break the gridlock. If Hillary Clinton is elected on Nov. 8 and succeeds President Barack Obama, the status quo (depending on party control of the U.S. Senate) is reinforced; if the “unpredictable” Donald J. Trump moves into the White House, all bets are off.

With judicial emergency status attached to the District of New Jersey vacancies, the state has been acutely affected by the slow pace of confirmation for federal judges.
