A New Jersey judge has ruled that a divorced parent may be required to pay additional child support if there is a clear indication that a child is gifted or talented.

Ocean County Superior Court Judge Lawrence Jones, in an unpublished opinion in P.S. v. J.S., said that while the state’s child support guidelines do not address how to deal with the costs of paying for the needs of a gifted or talented child, there may be circumstances when a divorced parent paying child support may be called on to pay more than previously ordered.
