Perhaps it’s heresy for a lawyer to want to be needed less, but at Becton, Dickinson & Co.’s legal department, the goal is to empower business units to perform more tasks without an attorney’s intervention.
“We’re trying to continue to build more self-service opportunities,” said David Highet, senior vice president and chief counsel for intellectual property and operations at the Franklin Lakes-based medical equipment company. One example is a contracting “center of excellence” within the department, staffed mostly by paralegals.
