Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. has gained a reputation for being acquisitive, but in the legal department led by general counsel Allan N. Rauch, growth has come at a different pace. Indeed, the average net gain of 11 lawyers a span of 22 years might be called downright deliberate.

Rauch was recruited to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1994 by his University of Pennsylvania Law School classmate, Steven Temares, who was the Union-based retailer’s general counsel at the time, and now is chief executive officer.
