It’s open enrollment time for anyone who needs health insurance coverage for next year and is planning to get it through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Individuals, and that includes many of the thousands of solo attorneys in New Jersey, must pick a plan no later than Dec. 15, or potentially face penalties.

On a recent morning, Brian McLaughlin, a market leader for USI Affinity, an insurance broker and sponsor of the New Jersey State Bar Association, met with members to walk them through the enrollment process. Sitting in a conference room at McElroy, Deutch, Mulvaney & Carptenter’s Morristown office, he fielded questions about the differences between group and individual policies; the impact the presidential election would have on the healthcare market; and what kinds of plans offer access to out-of-state doctors.
