Lowe’s Home Centers has agreed to pay $2.85 million to settle a New Jersey class action claiming it misclass­ified contract installers as independent contractors.

The plaintiff in the suit moved for preliminary approval of the settlement before U.S. District Judge Brian Martinotti in Newark on Tuesday. The suit asserted that installers are Lowe’s employees because the company controls all aspects of their business relationship and that the misclassification harmed the installers and their companies.
