Thomas Prol, a partner at the Sparta law firm Laddey, Clark & Ryan, was presented with the WPCNJ annual Social Justice Award for the New Jersey State Bar Association’s advocacy in that area on Jan. 12 at the 2017 Passion Power Program Award Ceremony at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick. The WPCNJ is dedicated to increasing women’s participation in the political process and promoting issues of equality for all women. Prol has served the association extensively for well over a decade as a trustee and officer, and is the first openly gay leader in State Bar history. He has been a vocal advocate on civil rights issues, including marriage equality and the New Jersey Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights—two issues in which the State Bar took an active role. In addition, he has served as vice chair and general counsel to Garden State Equality, a civil rights organization; he remains active on the group’s executive board. During his tenure at the NJSBA, Prol represented the association before the state Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the Council on Local Mandates, and various legislative bodies, while serving on numerous sections and committees.
