A Louisiana law firm has been sued by a man who says his identity was stolen after a court document listing his Social Security number was posted on the PACER system without redaction.

The Kullman Firm, of New Orleans, violated the plaintiff’s rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the New Jersey Identity Theft Protection Act when it removed his complaint from state to federal court, according to the suit filed Monday in federal court in Newark. According to the suit, the firm violated the procedures for electronic filing of documents, violating Federal Rule of Civil Procedure Rule 5.2(a), which requires redaction of Social Security numbers, and ignored a screen prompt asking users of the system, “Have you redacted?”
