New Jersey’s federal courts would gain three new judgeships if Congress approves a recommendation adopted Tuesday by the U.S. Judicial Conference.

Since 1990 the District of New Jersey has had 17 authorized judgeships, but the total would rise to 20 if the recommendation is approved. District court filings nationwide have grown 38 percent since that year, which was the last time a comprehensive judgeship bill was enacted, according to the Administrative Office of the Courts.
