A state appellate court has recognized for the first time that municipal attorneys in New Jersey have the right to unionize.
A three-judge panel last Monday approved certification of Local 1081 of the Communications Workers of America as the bargaining representative for lawyers employed by Newark, rejecting the city’s argument that unionization would interfere with the state Supreme Court’s exclusive jurisdiction to regulate the practice of law.
