Though the state Assembly is set to approve amended legislation to re-create the Department of the Public Advocate, partisan opposition in the evenly divided Senate is dimming its chances for enactment this term.
The Senate version, S-844, has stalled in the Senate State Government Committee, made up of three Democrats and three Republicans. Four votes are needed to move the bill out of committee, but thus far no Republican has been willing to cross party lines.
