Although New Jersey firms engage in their fair share of wooing summer associates with various outings and activities, it is the New York City firms that are renowned for their ability to treat their summer associates as quasi-royalty. But more and more law school students are seeking a valuable, practical summer experience and are opting to participate in reality-based training as opposed to a summer of Broadway shows and cocktail cruises around Manhattan.

In fall 1998, I entered the frenzy of the on-campus interviewing season with many of my classmates. I bought new ties (ones without piano keys or Bugs Bunny) and eventually figured out how to make knots that did not look like crumpled tissue.
