U.S. Circuit Judge Carol Los Mansmann, the second woman appointed to the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, where she served nearly 17 years, died on March 9 after a long battle with cancer. She was 59.

Chief U.S. Circuit Judge Edward Becker said that Mansmann “fought breast cancer like no one I have ever seen or heard of before. Her battle was truly for the ages.” Despite her “extreme course of medical treatment,” Becker said, she “never lost her composure” and only rarely took off from work.
