The new language, now found in Rule 7.1, reads “Lawyers may not imply or hold themselves out as practicing together in one firm when they are not a firm, as defined in Rule 1.0(c), because to do so would be false and misleading.”

Pennsylvania lawyers have a short time to make practice management changes if they are holding themselves out with other lawyers as a law firm or practice group without having established an actual law firm.
On Oct. 15, 2024, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued an order (effective Nov. 14, 2024) adopting revisions to the Pennsylvania Rules of Professional Conduct, notably tightening the previous guidance contained in the rules for lawyers holding themselves out as a firm.
