Justice Charles Spain is seeking reelection in the Democratic primary, where Spain is being challenged by Derek Obialo, a Nigerian immigrant with a construction and commercial law practice. Spain's seat on the appellate court also drew two Republican challengers: Fort Bend County 286th District Court Judge Steve Rogers is running against Tonya McLaughlin, a former felony prosecutor who now runs her own criminal defense practice.
