Mark Rowlands represents clients in complex commercial dispute resolution, with a focus on international trusts disputes, directors’ duties, equitable remedies, and restitutionary claims and defences. Before joining Kobre & Kim, Mark practiced at another leading BVI law firm, where he handled a wide range of litigation including contentious trusts, arbitration, restructuring, complex fraud, and asset recovery. From 2012 Mark practised as an independent barrister from the chambers of Sir Geoffrey Cox KC, the former Attorney General of England and Wales, and from 2014 to 2015, Mark worked in Mauritius, where he established an affiliate office of Thomas More Chambers in the Ebene Cybercity, specialising in private-client, company, and arbitration work.
Question : What drew you to specialise in private client law/ wealth advisory?
Answer: The complexity and the interesting clients.
Question : For lawyers entering private client law, what are key skills you think are essential?
Answer: The ability to work well with different types of people with different objectives, to manage their expectations, and to think not only in terms of legal issues but also solutions to clients' practical and commercial worries.
Question : With the evolving landscape of the private client world, what are recent trends or shifts you are excited to explore?
Answer: The increasing involvement of regulators and law-enforcement agencies in private trusts, and the integration/coordination of traditional and non-traditional asset-holding structures from a range of jurisdictions.
