Nigel joined Butterfield in Guernsey in July 2023, initially as Senior Strategic Relationship Manager. Since November 2024 he has been Group Head of Trust, Legal; responsible for internal advisory across all our Trust jurisdictions and for the conduct of contentious matters affecting the Trust business globally. A graduate of the University of Kent, Nigel also spent a year studying European and International Law at the University of Copenhagen. After taking his exams at the Inns of Court School of Law, he was called to the Bar of England and Wales and to the Bar of Gibraltar in 1999. Nigel has also been a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) since 2008. Originally from Gibraltar, Nigel enjoyed a general litigation practise at the Gibraltar Bar, before joining a Big 4 accounting firm as in-house counsel in their trust and corporate services team. In 2005 he moved to Switzerland where he spent 17 years working for trust companies, as in-house counsel, as a director and trustee, and most recently as a trusts & estates adviser with a multinational Swiss bank. Bilingual in English and Spanish, he also speaks some French and Italian.
Question : What drew you to specialise in private client law/ wealth advisory?
Answer: The opportunity to work with clients during their best, but also toughest times (plus serendipity)
Question : For lawyers entering private client law, what are key skills you think are essential?
Answer: Great listening skills are essential, but so is a curious and inquisitive nature
Question : With the evolving landscape of the private client world, what are recent trends or shifts you are excited to explore?
Answer: The challenges to structures and to trustees which will be thrown up by the great wealth transfer
