Who Got The Work

Hogan Lovells partner David Newmann has joined the legal team backing the Pennsylvania State Conference of the NAACP in a pending voting rights lawsuit against the Acting Secretary of State Leigh M. Chapman and 67 Pennsylvania county boards of elections. The case, filed Nov. 4 in Pennsylvania Western District Court, contends that the defendants will not count thousands of timely received mail ballots submitted for the Nov. 2022 election based on the technicality that ballots must include a handwritten date next to signatures on the return envelope. The suit was initiated by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the Pennsylvania State Conference of the NAACP; the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania and other plaintiffs. The defendants are represented by Babst Calland Clements and Zomnir and other counsel; Jones Day is counseling the intervenors, which include the Republican National Committee. The case is 1:22-cv-00339, Pennsylvania State Conference Of The NAACP et al v. Chapman et al.
