New Suit - Copyright Class Action

OpenAI Inc., developer of the ChatGPT AI language generator, was slapped with a copyright infringement class action on Sept. 8 in California Northern District Court. The complaint, which is backed by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Michael Chabon and Tony Award winning playwright David Henry Hwang, among other named plaintiffs, accuses OpenAI of unlawfully exploiting copyrighted works to train its large language models. The suit, part of a string of similar actions on behalf of copyright owners, was filed by Ventura Hersey & Muller and Cafferty Clobes Meriwether & Sprengel. Counsel have not yet appeared for the defendants. The case is 3:23-cv-04557, T. v. Openai LP.
