New Suit - Employment Discrimination

Smithfield Foods, a major U.S. meat-processing company headquartered in Smithfield, Virginia, and Smithfield Fresh Meats Sales Corp. were hit with an employment discrimination lawsuit on May 17 in Georgia Northern District Court. The court case was brought by Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of a remote-based senior sales account manager who contends that she was wrongfully terminated in retaliation for not relocating to the defendant's Smithfield, Virginia headquarters. The suit further contends that her relocation was not the sole reason for her termination, but a reduction-in-force of the sales staff was needed; which saw four employees over the age of 55 years old being terminated. Counsel have not yet appeared for the defendants. The case is 1:24-cv-02158, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Smithfield Foods, Inc.
