Hammonds and Squire, Sanders & Dempsey are set to start integrating their practices and partner pay after securing the vote of more than 95 percent of their combined partnerships to launch as Squire Sanders Hammonds in the new year. The decision means Hammonds partners will be remunerated entirely on merit by 2013, in keeping with Squire Sanders' existing practice. The move to a fully merit-based system at Squire Sanders Hammonds will begin to be phased in during 2012.

After more than two months of official talks, British firm Hammonds and Squire, Sanders & Dempsey have agreed to merge in the latest trans-Atlantic law firm combination. Partners at both firms approved the merger in a vote held over the weekend. The union will take effect on Jan. 1, 2011. The merger will see Squire Sanders Chairman James Maiwurm become global chair and CEO of the combined firm. Hammonds Managing Partner Peter Crossley will become the managing partner for Europe.

Hammonds Hong Kong Office Splits From Firm, Rejecting Squire Sanders Merger

Hammonds' six-partner Hong Kong arm said on Nov. 24 that it intends to separate from the firm, with the partners rejecting the merger with U.S. firm Squire Sanders. With the trans-Atlantic tie-up due to go live on Jan. 1, it remains unclear when the office will formally split from Hammonds or whether the partners will form a stand-alone firm or try to join another firm as a team. The decision means the newly-merged firm's Hong Kong presence will now consist of Squire Sanders' four-partner, 11-lawyer office.
