Judge Goes Easy on Lawyer Who Made 'French Fries' Comment About Her

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Laurel Myerson Isicoff opted for leniency in the case of a prominent Chicago lawyer who told her she was "a few french fries short of a Happy Meal." She decided not to bar McDermott Will & Emery partner William P. Smith from practicing in South Florida bankruptcy court. Instead, Isicoff ordered him Wednesday to take an online course in professionalism administered by the Florida Bar, even though he's not a Bar member in Florida and was practicing as a visiting lawyer.

Mold Class Action Results in Multimillion-Dollar Settlement

One of the nation's largest real estate investment trusts will pay a multimillion-dollar settlement to more than 1,000 residents of a Florida apartment building to end a mold class action. Class members alleged an improperly executed renovation of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system allowed mold to spread throughout the building. Colorado-based Archstone-Smith Operating Trust has said that total repair, settlement and related costs could reach $25 million.

Sunshine State Firm Bucks Trend, Raises Associate Pay

As other major law firms order layoffs and pay cuts, GrayRobinson is giving an average 8 percent raise to its associates. Tuesday's pay raises were as high as 15 percent, and 90 percent of associates received raises, said law firm president Byrd "Biff" Marshall Jr. The merit-based increases were decided on an individual basis. All support staffers at the firm, which has 10 offices throughout Florida, also are getting higher pay, he said. The raises were announced at a firm retreat last weekend.

Wells Fargo Bank is asking a judge to take control of a troubled Boca Raton, Fla., condo conversion that the bank lent $91 million to purchase and redevelop, according to a suit filed in Florida state court. Wells Fargo claims that the developer failed to make its loan payments in a case that could be the largest recent real estate loan default in South Florida. The bank is demanding that the property go into receivership and that the developer return $73.9 million.
